This workshop will empower you to be informed about selecting and implementing participation-focused interventions for people with a disability.

Participation-focused interventions are becoming increasingly recognised as an important starting point for therapy interventions and an essential avenue to encourage physical activity throughout the lifespan.
 

In this workshop you will:
  • Learn the latest evidence supporting participation-focused interventions
  • Develop strategies and practical solutions to support participation in physical activity in therapy practice.
  • Understand the content of participation-focused interventions and how to match strategies to facilitators/barriers of participation. 
  • Learn how to be guided by health behaviour change principles and motivational interviewing.

This three-hour workshop will provide you with interactive case discussions, intervention planning and strategies to use in clinical practice.

Associate Professor Leanne Sakzewski

Associate Professor Sakzewski is an Occupational Therapist with over 35 years clinical and research experience working withAssociate Professor Leanne Sakzewski children with disabilities and their families. She led a large multi-site study in Australia of a participation-focused intervention for 110 children with cerebral palsy. As the senior researcher, she oversaw the development and initial testing of the Participate-CP framework. The intervention was developed with strong theoretical underpinnings of Self-Determination and behaviour change. Participate-CP remains the only participation-focused intervention that has been tested in a randomized controlled trial.

 

Dr Gaela Kilgour

Dr Kilgour is a New Zealand trained physiotherapist and physical educator with more than 35 years of experience. Dr Kilgour is a post-doctoral research fellow with the Queensland Cerebral Palsy and Rehabilitation Research Centre. Gaela has conducted participation-focused research with children with cerebral palsy of all functional abilities, aged 2-16 years, and in daily clinical physiotherapy practice. Her clinical and research work focuses on promoting physical activity opportunities for children and families, developing community based, individualised participation-focused interventions, and supporting families to make lifestyle changes for sustained participation.
